As pressure mounts on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, Democratic leaders are facing accusations of staging a veiled coup, prioritizing elite preferences over the will of primary voters.
The recent push to sideline President Joe Biden from the 2024 Democratic presidential race has sparked concerns about a potential coup attempt by party elites, who fear Biden's declining popularity could jeopardize their electoral chances.
Democratic Elite's Coup Attempt to Oust Biden Raises Alarm
Unlike a traditional coup, where leadership collectively demands a resignation, this attempt appears to be a factional power struggle driven by the belief that Biden would lose to former President Donald Trump.
For the move to avoid being seen as a coup, there would need to be widespread support and a clear emergency, neither of which are present in this case. Instead, it resembles an internal battle for influence, suggesting a coup-like maneuver.
Democratic Elite's Coup Attempt to Oust Biden Raises Alarm
President Biden has every right to be outraged by the actions of former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who are reportedly orchestrating behind-the-scenes efforts to persuade him to step aside. Biden has rightfully pointed out that he received 18 million votes and won every primary, yet the elites are attempting to overturn the will of the people.
In the latest ploy, major donors are threatening to withhold funding from Biden's campaign and down-ballot races unless he agrees to withdraw. This tactic essentially admits that wealthy Democrats can dictate the party's nominee, regardless of voter preferences.
Democratic Elite's Coup Attempt to Oust Biden Raises Alarm
Fortunately, not all Democrats are on board with this attempt. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has expressed support for Biden, as have other influential figures such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Congressional Black Caucus.
Those who stand by Biden are taking a gamble that he can still win the presidency, despite his low approval ratings. A strong ground game in key swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin could still sway the outcome, especially if states like Virginia do not deliver a resounding victory for the GOP.
However, it is worth considering the consequences if Biden does win a second term with heavy support from the far left wing of the party. Such an outcome could push the Democratic Party further towards socialism.
Coups that fail often strengthen the target's position, and if Biden's candidacy survives, he will emerge with even more defiant power. With less than a month before Democrats officially nominate Biden, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to withstand the pressure and secure the nomination.
Despite the efforts of party leaders and billionaire donors, Democratic voters have chosen Joe Biden, and this attempt to overturn their choice seems to be losing momentum. This development is positive for Biden and may ultimately benefit Republicans should Trump decide to run again. However, the 2024 election promises to be full of unexpected twists and turns.
