Democratic Governors Stockpile Abortion Pills in Anticipation of Trump's Return

In anticipation of a possible return of former President Donald Trump to the White House, Democratic governors are stockpiling abortion pills to ensure access for women in their states.
The Supreme Court has ruled against a challenge to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) regulatory approval process for the abortion drug Mifepristone. However, some Democratic Party leaders are reportedly preparing for a hypothetical scenario where the Trump administration rescinds the approval or uses the 1873 Comstock Act to criminalize mailing Mifepristone across state lines.
Governor Jay Inslee of Washington State is one of at least five Democratic governors who have established stockpiles of Mifepristone to guard against the possibility of a Trump administration stopping its interstate distribution.

"We have it physically in the state of Washington, which could stop him and his anti-choice forces from prohibiting its distribution," Inslee told The New York Times. "It has a life span of five or six years. If there was another Trump administration, it'll get us through."
Inslee's aides argue that even if the FDA rescinds its approval of the pills, they would argue that the FDA lacks authority to restrict usage of stockpiles already existing in states, provided they don't cross state lines.

Aside from abortion pills, leftist groups are also preparing to fight Trump on a variety of issues on the legal front.
One liberal resistance group, Democracy Forward, has developed a 15-page threat matrix that covers issues including abortion, health care, climate, civil rights, environmental protections, immigration, and the "weaponization of government."

They have also begun recruiting sympathetic plaintiffs who would have legal standing in court.
While not wanting to publicly signal a lack of confidence in Biden's campaign, The Times reported leftist groups' "angst is intensified by Mr. Biden's low approval numbers and by his persistent trailing of Mr. Trump in polls of the states that are likely to decide the election."
Democratic governors are also preparing for other potential Trump attacks on progressive policies, such as the Affordable Care Act, environmental regulations, and immigration protections.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has established a "resistance council" to coordinate with other states and advocate for progressive policies.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has created a task force to protect the state's reproductive rights and access to abortion.
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has vowed to fight any attempts by the Trump administration to roll back LGBTQ+ rights.
Oregon Governor Kate Brown has ordered state agencies to prioritize climate action and protect immigrant rights.
These actions by Democratic governors and leftist groups reflect the intense polarization in American politics and the high stakes involved in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
