According to MSNBC guest Tim Alberta, the Democratic Party's enthusiasm gap compared to former President Trump's supporters is a major concern for the party, with elected officials struggling to find volunteers in battleground states.

The Democratic Party is facing a significant enthusiasm gap compared to former President Trump's supporters, according to a recent MSNBC guest. Tim Alberta, a staff writer for The Atlantic, discussed the challenges faced by Democratic elected officials in battleground states, who are struggling to find volunteers for campaign activities such as phone banking, mail campaigns, and door-to-door canvassing.

"I've never seen an enthusiasm gap like the one we're witnessing in the summer of this election year," Alberta said on "Deadline: White House." He attributed this lack of enthusiasm among the Democratic base to a perceived lack of intensity and a disconnect between the party's message and the concerns of voters.

Alberta further suggested that if President Biden were to step aside and a new candidate were to take his place, it could lead to a surge of enthusiasm and financial support. "If Biden were to step aside ... you've got to expect that they would see a massive, historic fundraising surge of their own," he said.

Former Obama adviser Van Jones also weighed in on the enthusiasm gap, comparing the energy at the Republican National Convention to that which he witnessed during Barack Obama's first nomination in 2008. Jones described the Republican convention as a fulfillment of Trump's political ambitions, despite the challenges he has faced.

However, Jones argued that for President Biden, the dream of a successful presidency has turned into a nightmare. An AP-NORC survey conducted before the attempted assassination of Trump in Pennsylvania found that 7 in 10 adults, including 65% of Democrats, believe Biden should withdraw from the race.

Overall, 57% of adults believe that Trump should also withdraw, but he continues to maintain support from his party, with 73% of Republicans saying he should stay in the race. The Democratic Party, on the other hand, is divided, with only 35% of Democrats supporting Biden's continued campaign.

The Democratic Party's struggle with enthusiasm is a significant challenge for the party as it approaches the midterm elections. The party's ability to mobilize its base and energize voters will be crucial in determining the outcome of races in key battleground states. The Democratic National Committee and individual candidates will need to find ways to connect with voters and address their concerns if they hope to overcome the enthusiasm gap and be competitive in November.
