Former heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder expresses concern for Mike Tyson's well-being in the upcoming fight against Jake Paul.
Former heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder has voiced his fears that Mike Tyson, 57, may suffer serious consequences, potentially ending up in a coma, during his upcoming fight with Jake Paul. The fight, initially planned as an exhibition match, has been sanctioned as a professional fight by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations.
Wilder believes the commission's decision to license Tyson, who has been inactive for 20 years, is irresponsible and could lead to grave outcomes. He explains that a single punch to the wrong place at the wrong time can have life-threatening consequences, citing examples of fighters who have fallen into comas after sustaining severe head injuries in the ring.
Moreover, Wilder questions the sincerity of those involved who claim to care about Tyson's well-being. He believes that the primary motivation for the fight is financial gain, rather than genuine concern for the boxer's health.
"People can get hit in the wrong place and at the wrong time, there's lots of examples where guys have been hit into a coma. It's easy to do. He's too old for this," Wilder stated.
Wilder dismisses Tyson's recent medical tests and workout videos as insufficient indicators of his readiness for a competitive fight. He emphasizes the importance of overall fitness and stamina, which decline with age, and argues that Tyson may not be adequately prepared to withstand the demands of a professional boxing match.
"His power may not have left completely, but you still need to set it up, your stamina needs to be a certain way, or it's going to look like a clown show," Wilder explained.
Wilder's concerns extend beyond Tyson's physical well-being. He fears that a defeat at the hands of a YouTuber could tarnish Tyson's legacy and be the lasting image people have of his illustrious boxing career.
"I don't want the last thing I remember of him is him getting knocked out by a YouTuber. The last thing you do, that's what people remember you by," Wilder said.
While Paul and Tyson prepare for their highly anticipated fight, Wilder will face Zhilei Zhang on June 1. Despite his concern for Tyson, Wilder remains confident in his own abilities and is determined to continue his professional boxing career.
The boxing world anxiously awaits the outcome of the Tyson-Paul fight, with many sharing Wilder's fears about Tyson's potential vulnerability. However, others believe that Tyson's legendary status and years of experience will prove to be an advantage against the younger and less experienced Paul. Only time will tell who will emerge victorious and whether Wilder's grave concerns will be realized.
