DeMar DeRozan's time with the Chicago Bulls has come to an end, as he has agreed to a sign-and-trade deal that will send him to the Sacramento Kings. The Kings reportedly agreed to a three-year, $74 million deal with DeRozan, who had one year remaining on his contract with the Bulls.
DeMar DeRozan's pursuit of an NBA championship will continue in a new chapter with the Sacramento Kings. The 34-year-old forward has agreed to a three-year, $74 million contract with the Kings, according to a report from ESPN.
DeRozan's departure from the Chicago Bulls comes after a successful two-year stint with the franchise that culminated in a playoff appearance last season. The Bulls acquired DeRozan in a sign-and-trade deal with the San Antonio Spurs in 2021, and he quickly became a key piece of their resurgence.
In Chicago, DeRozan averaged 21.8 points, 4.8 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game. He also played a vital role in mentoring young players like Lonzo Ball and Zach LaVine. However, despite their progress, the Bulls were unable to advance past the first round of the playoffs in either of DeRozan's seasons with the team.
DeRozan's desire for a championship remains unfulfilled, and he believes he can achieve that goal with the Kings. Sacramento finished the 2022-23 season with a 30-52 record, but they possess a young and talented roster led by All-Star guard De'Aaron Fox.
DeRozan will join a Kings team that also features talented players like Domantas Sabonis, Malik Monk, and Kevin Huerter. The Kings are expected to make a push for a playoff berth in the upcoming season, and DeRozan's experience and leadership will be invaluable assets.
As part of the sign-and-trade deal, the Kings are sending Harrison Barnes to the San Antonio Spurs. Barnes, a veteran forward, averaged 16.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game for the Kings last season.
The Spurs are also receiving Chris Duarte, a 25-year-old guard who played for the Indiana Pacers last season. Duarte averaged 13.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game in his sophomore season.
The Bulls are acquiring two second-round picks and cash in the deal. The Bulls will have some flexibility to fill the void left by DeRozan's departure, but they will miss his leadership and scoring abilities.
DeRozan's departure marks a significant shift for the Bulls, who are now entering a rebuilding phase. The Bulls traded Zach LaVine to the Atlanta Hawks earlier this month, and they have a number of young players on their roster that will need to step up.
The Kings, on the other hand, are hoping DeRozan's addition will be the final piece they need to reach the playoffs and compete for a championship. DeRozan has already expressed his excitement about joining the Kings and playing alongside Fox and Sabonis.
Time will tell whether DeRozan can lead the Kings to their first NBA championship in franchise history. However, one thing is for sure: DeRozan's passion for the game and his desire to win are undeniable assets that the Kings will be counting on heavily in the upcoming season.
