Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is grieving the loss of his father while navigating a season marked by injuries and off-field controversies.
Deshaun Watson's path to the field this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys is bittersweet, as he carries the weight of a personal loss. The Browns quarterback announced on Friday that his father, Don Richardson, had passed away.
"Rest in Peace Pops," Watson wrote in an Instagram story.

Watson, 28, had a strained relationship with his father, and rarely saw him growing up. He told the Houston Chronicle in 2017 that his mother was his primary caregiver.
"Instead of using Richardson as his surname, the quarterback uses his mother's last name," the article notes.

Watson's season has been overshadowed by both personal and professional challenges. After a successful career at Clemson University, where he led the Tigers to a national championship in 2016, Watson was drafted by the Houston Texans in 2017. He had three Pro Bowl seasons with the Texans before being traded to the Browns in 2022.
However, Watson's arrival in Cleveland was marred by sexual misconduct allegations, resulting in an 11-game suspension at the start of the 2022 season. He played the final six games of the season, but injuries curtailed his 2023 campaign, leading to season-ending shoulder surgery in November.
Despite his on-field struggles, Watson has led the Browns to a promising 5-1 start in 2023. However, the loss of his father has added an emotional layer to an already demanding season.
Watson's journey has been marked by resilience and the support of his family and teammates. His mother, Regina, has been a constant presence throughout his life, and he has found solace in the support of the Browns organization.
As Watson takes the field on Sunday, he will carry the memory of his father with him, drawing inspiration from his legacy and determination to overcome adversity.
