The horror unfolded at approximately 2:25 a.m. in the Mohican Regent neighborhood on the 13000 block of Rossini near Gratiot Avenue, where revelers ranging in age from 17 to 27 became victims of indiscriminate gunfire. The carnage left the community reeling and law enforcement scrambling to piece together the events leading to the tragedy.

At the scene, investigators discovered a chilling array of evidence: approximately 100 shell casings and nine guns, including one equipped with a Glock switch, a device that converts semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons. The grim discovery underscores the escalating violence and the proliferation of illegal weapons in the city.

The victims who lost their lives were identified as a 21-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, their lives cut short by senseless violence. One person remained in critical condition on Monday, while 17 other victims were expected to recover from their injuries.

"I want to be clear. We’re not going to have neighbors becoming hostages in their own homes this summer," Mayor Duggan declared. "We ask for the public’s help in shutting down the illegal block parties in the early stages before problems develop."

In response to the escalating violence, Detroit Police Chief James White announced the launch of a Neighborhood Response Team, tasked with monitoring for illegal parties and promptly shutting them down. Calls involving unsanctioned block parties have been elevated to "priority one" status, ensuring a swift police response.

The police will focus on disorderly conduct, illegal parking, and any activity that disrupts the normal flow of an area, but more serious offenses, such as carrying illegal weapons, will also be addressed.

Mayor Duggan emphasized that party hosts and property owners, not partygoers, will be targeted by the new enforcement initiative. Legal parties contained within houses and backyards do not require permits, he clarified.

"Block parties used to be good, clean fun," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "But now, many of them are venues of death, fear, violence, and destruction. Should we have to regulate them? No. Must we? Absolutely, yes."

Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield referred to the incident as an "unspeakable tragedy" and called for an "all-hands-on-deck approach to ending the senseless killings and destruction of families in our community."

U.S. Rep Rashida Tlaib also condemned the violence, stating, "Another senseless shooting today, leaving families in our community shattered. We owe it to our families to address this crisis with urgency. We need to save lives now."

The horrific events of Sunday have left an indelible scar on the Detroit community. The investigation into the shooting continues, and no arrests have been made yet. However, the city is determined to quell the violence and restore a sense of peace and security for its residents.
