Dien Bien Phu: A Historical Legacy and a Symbol of Independence

On May 7, 2024, Vietnam commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, a decisive victory for Vietnamese troops against the French colonial army. The battle, which lasted nearly two months and ended with the surrender of French Commander General Christian de Castries, marked the end of almost a century of French colonial rule in Indochina.

The commemoration ceremony was held at a stadium in the center of Dien Bien Phu, once a village in a valley and now a bustling city of over 80,000 people. Thousands of locals and veterans, many of them in their 90s, cheered and waved Vietnamese flags as the military parade marched by under a brief tropical shower.

One of the veterans, Nguyen Trung Dung, 94, said the event was a good opportunity for him to meet up with his friends, those he fought alongside in the Dien Bien Phu battle. "I am very happy to be here," he said. "It is a chance for me to remember the past and to honor the sacrifices of my comrades."

Also in attendance was French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu, the first time such a high ranking French official visited the former battlefield and attended the commemorations in Dien Bien Phu. Lecornu's presence underscored the evolving relationship between Vietnam and its former colonial power.

"When we were fighting, we were enemies. But now, we shake hands with them," said another 94-year-old veteran, Pham Duc Cu, who commanded an artillery company during the battle. "Together we unite to build a world of peace and happiness and no war."

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu holds a significant place in Vietnamese history, not only as a military victory but also as a symbol of national independence and resistance against colonialism. The victory inspired other countries to fight for their freedom and became a turning point in the struggle for decolonization around the world.

In a speech at the ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said, "The historic Dien Bien Phu victory is a remarkable event, not only for the Vietnamese revolution. It is also a monumental saga that inspired countries rising up to fight for independence and freedom, marking the collapse of colonialism all over the world."

As time passes, the relationship between Vietnam and France has evolved from one of conflict to one of cooperation and mutual respect. The commemoration of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu serves as a reminder of the past while also highlighting the progress made in reconciliation and the shared goal of building a peaceful and prosperous future.
