Austin Dillon's unexpected win at Richmond has thrown the NASCAR Cup Series playoff race into chaos, leaving several contenders on the bubble.
The biggest fear for teams vying for a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs is the possibility of a driver outside the current mix upsetting them with a victory. This fear has now become a reality, as Austin Dillon, who entered the Richmond race 32nd in the standings, has propelled himself into playoff contention with a controversial victory.
With just three races remaining in the regular season at Michigan, Daytona, and Darlington, the playoff field is set to be finalized. The top 16 drivers in the standings will qualify, with the regular-season champion securing the first spot and the remaining 15 drivers ranked by wins, with ties broken by points.
Dillon's Victory Shakes Up NASCAR Playoff Contenders
Currently, seven drivers have already secured their playoff berths with at least one victory: Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, William Byron, Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, and Tyler Reddick. With 13 drivers having won this season, up to three spots could be available via points.
Dillon's victory at Richmond has shuffled the playoff picture significantly. Previously, four spots were up for grabs for winless drivers, but now that number has been reduced to three. Chris Buescher and Ross Chastain, who were previously in contention, have dropped below the cutline, while Bubba Wallace has moved into the favorable position of being one of the three winless drivers with the most points.
Five winless drivers are now in the running for the three remaining playoff spots based on points:
- Martin Truex Jr. (78 points above the cutline)
- Ty Gibbs (60 points above Wallace)
- Bubba Wallace (15 points above Buescher and Chastain)
- Chris Buescher (tied with Chastain, 3 points behind Wallace)
- Ross Chastain (tied with Buescher, 3 points behind Wallace)
Buescher and Chastain have both won races in the past, with Buescher claiming victories at Michigan and Daytona last year. However, Wallace has also performed well at those tracks. Gibbs, on the other hand, is still seeking his first Cup win. Chastain has the most recent experience in playoff pressure situations, having proven his ability to make things happen in high-stakes scenarios.
In addition to these contenders, 16 other playoff-eligible drivers face must-win situations, including Chase Briscoe, Kyle Busch, Todd Gilliland, Josh Berry, Michael McDowell, and Carson Hocevar. With just three races remaining, the battle for playoff spots is heating up, and any of these drivers could make a last-ditch effort to secure their place in the championship chase.
