All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Miami Dolphins, worth $72.3 million. The deal solidifies Ramsey's position as the highest-paid player at his position in the NFL, surpassing the recent extension of Denver Broncos' Patrick Surtain II.

The Miami Dolphins have locked down another key piece of their defensive puzzle, signing All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey to a three-year contract extension worth $72.3 million. The deal reportedly includes $40 million in guaranteed money.

Ramsey, 29, has been named to seven consecutive Pro Bowls and is considered one of the most dominant cornerbacks in the NFL. His new contract solidifies his position as the highest-paid player at his position, surpassing the four-year, $70 million extension signed by Denver Broncos' Patrick Surtain II earlier this week.

The Dolphins acquired Ramsey in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams last offseason, sending the Rams a first-round pick and a third-round pick in exchange for Ramsey and a fifth-round pick. Ramsey suffered a knee injury early in his first training camp in Miami and missed the first part of the 2023 season after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He returned to have three interceptions and 22 tackles in his first season with the Dolphins.

First-year Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has suggested that Ramsey will roam both sides of the field this season, taking advantage of his exceptional coverage skills. Ramsey's presence is expected to bolster a Dolphins defense that has struggled to generate turnovers in recent seasons.

The Dolphins' commitment to Ramsey reflects their belief in his talent and their long-term plans for the team. With Ramsey locked up on a long-term deal, the Dolphins can now focus on other key areas of their roster, such as their wide receiver corps and offensive line.

Ramsey's extension is the latest in a series of moves by the Dolphins to secure their core players. Last week, head coach Mike McDaniel was rewarded with a multi-year contract extension. Prior to that, the Dolphins locked up quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a four-year, $106 million contract extension.

The Dolphins open their regular season on Sept. 8, when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ramsey is expected to play a key role in helping the Dolphins improve on their 9-8 record from last season and make a push for the playoffs.

* Ramsey's new contract is the largest ever given to a cornerback in NFL history.
