Don Johnson, the epitome of 1980s stardom with his role as Detective Sonny Crockett in "Miami Vice," has shared his experiences of the overwhelming fame that accompanied his success. In a recent interview with People magazine, Johnson opened up about the intense fandom, comparing it to the seclusion experienced by music legend Elvis Presley.
"For a long time, I couldn't even go anywhere," Johnson confides. "I had to isolate. The [women] know where you are. We had security 24/7." The constant attention and security measures brought to mind Presley's struggles with privacy.

Johnson recognized the potential consequences of becoming too closely associated with his character. Determined to avoid being typecast, he vowed not to let fame imprison him. As a result, he diligently pursued roles that showcased his versatility.
"My goal then was to not be Sonny Crockett forever," he explains. "I had seen the peril of the actors who were too identifiable with their character."

The 74-year-old actor remains grateful for the career boost he received from "Miami Vice," which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. However, he emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between his professional and personal lives.
"Work-life balance is an interesting thing as an actor because movies eat your life," says Johnson. "Television shows eat your life." With age and experience, he now prioritizes roles that offer him joy without requiring excessive time commitments.

"I'm still on the menu!" he jokes. "Each opportunity to perform brings me joy."
