Born on August 11, 1938, in the Jamaican parish of St. Ann, Donald Harris grew up in a family of modest means. His father, Oscar, was a farmer and storekeeper, while his mother, Violet, was a homemaker. Despite the family's limited resources, Donald excelled academically, demonstrating a keen interest in economics and social issues.
After completing high school, Donald Harris pursued higher education at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. He graduated with honors in 1959, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Donald decided to continue his studies in the United States.
In 1961, Donald Harris immigrated to the United States and enrolled in the graduate program at the University of California, Berkeley. He quickly distinguished himself as a brilliant student, earning a Master of Arts degree in economics in 1963 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1966. His doctoral dissertation focused on the economic development of Jamaica, reflecting his deep concern for his home country.
During his time at Berkeley, Donald Harris became actively involved in social justice movements. He joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and participated in the Civil Rights Movement, advocating for racial equality and fair treatment for all. His experiences during this period further shaped his political and social views.
After completing his doctorate, Donald Harris embarked on a successful academic career. He taught economics at Stanford University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he gained recognition for his expertise in international economics, economic development, and public policy.
Donald Harris also served as a consultant to the World Bank and other international organizations, providing economic advice and assisting in developing strategies for improving the lives of people in developing countries. His commitment to social justice extended beyond the classroom, as he actively participated in community development initiatives and mentored young people from underprivileged backgrounds.
In 1962, Donald Harris married Shyamala Gopalan, an Indian immigrant who had also pursued higher education in the United States. Shyamala was a renowned cancer researcher and activist who became a strong advocate for social and economic equality. The couple had two daughters, Kamala and Maya.
Donald Harris was a devoted and loving father who played a significant role in shaping his daughters' lives. He instilled in them a strong sense of civic responsibility, encouraged their intellectual curiosity, and supported their aspirations.
