North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum is considered a potential running mate for former President Trump, but he faces several potential drawbacks, including a lack of name recognition, his origin from a small and reliably Republican state, and his wealth.
Despite being considered a frontrunner on former President Trump's potential running mate shortlist, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum faces several significant drawbacks that could make his selection a risky move, according to multiple campaign and election experts.
Burgum's lack of name recognition is a major concern, as it could hinder his ability to galvanize the Republican base or attract voters across the country. GOP strategist Dave Polyansky argues that while firing up the base is not the primary goal for a running mate, there is no "overwhelming cry" for Burgum to be the pick among Republicans nationwide.
Another potential downside is Burgum's origin from a small and reliably Republican state. Veteran Republican strategist Karl Rove believes that Burgum's geographical background could limit his impact on the electoral map, as the battle for the presidency often comes down to swing states such as Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Wisconsin.
Furthermore, Burgum's wealth could make him an easy target for attacks from the left during the campaign. Rove suggests that Burgum's riches could be used to paint him as out of touch with the concerns of average Americans.
Republican strategist Erin Perrine acknowledges that Burgum's downsides are not as controversial compared to other potential selections Trump could make. However, she agrees that Burgum's lack of experience in a large or competitive state could raise questions about his suitability as a vice presidential nominee.
Perrine also highlights Burgum's previous statement that he would not serve as Trump's running mate. This, coupled with the potential for increased media scrutiny over his prolonged absence from North Dakota, could further complicate his selection.
A source close to the Trump campaign bluntly states that there is "more downside than upside" in choosing Burgum, citing the concerns over his name recognition and geographical origin. The source ranks Burgum in the top five or six potential contenders but doubts he will be selected any higher.
GOP pollster Scott Rasmussen dismisses Burgum's candidacy, stating that he sees no reason why he should even be considered other than media speculation. He believes that Burgum will likely play a different role in the campaign.
Despite the concerns raised, Burgum has several strengths that could provide a boost to Trump's candidacy. Rove acknowledges his successful track record as governor of a state with a strong economy and agricultural sector. Polyansky highlights Burgum's proven communication skills and ability to deliver an effective message.
Burgum's business experience as the founder of Great Plains Software, which he sold to Microsoft, also mirrors Trump's background and could be appealing to the former president. Perrine praises Burgum's "no-nonsense" demeanor and his ability to improve the economy and safety of North Dakota.
Ultimately, Burgum's potential as a running mate for Trump remains uncertain. He faces several challenges, including his lack of name recognition and origin from a small state. However, his strong record in business and government, as well as his communication skills, could make him a valuable asset to Trump's campaign.
