Jaden Hays, wanted for robbery and assault, led officers on a high-speed chase from Washington into Oregon, reaching speeds of 120 mph. He attempted to evade arrest by swimming into the Columbia River but eventually surrendered.

Jaden Hays, 27, was apprehended on Monday after a thrilling high-speed pursuit that spanned state lines and culminated in a desperate attempt to flee by swimming in a river.

Authorities in Washington had issued warrants for Hays on charges of first-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault stemming from an incident on June 25 in Longview. According to police, Hays allegedly stole property from a family member and threatened to harm them.

On Monday evening, officers spotted Hays' black Volkswagen at Miller's Market in Longview and initiated a felony traffic stop. However, Hays defied the order and sped away, leading police on a perilous chase.

For over 15 miles, Hays evaded officers at reckless speeds, reaching a staggering 120 mph. The chase crossed the Lewis and Clark Bridge into Oregon before reaching its climax near Clatskanie.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office in Oregon successfully deployed spike strips, disabling Hays' vehicle. Undeterred, Hays abandoned his car and made a desperate attempt to swim across the Columbia River to escape arrest.

Authorities negotiated with Hays, persuading him to return to shore where he surrendered without further incident. He was taken into custody at the Columbia County Jail and faces charges of felony eluding, resisting arrest, and reckless driving.

Hays' disregard for traffic laws endangered both the officers pursuing him and innocent bystanders. His attempt to flee by swimming in the river was a testament to his desperation but ultimately proved futile.

The extradition process is underway to return Hays to Longview, where he will face the charges against him. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of evading law enforcement and the lengths some individuals will go to avoid apprehension.
