Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green has taken to social media to express his concerns about Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark's safety, following an incident with Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter. Green believes the Fever need an enforcer to protect their players from physical play.
Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has sparked a discussion about the need for enforcers in the WNBA after an incident between Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter and Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark. Carter drew criticism for a hip-check on Clark, which prompted Green to question the physicality around the former Iowa standout.
Green, who has been suspended for on-court incidents in the past, took to Instagram to voice his opinion. "Indiana better go invest in an enforcer… FAST!" he wrote in the comments section of an ESPNW post.
Others on social media echoed Green's sentiment. Carter herself liked a post on Twitter that suggested the Fever lack a player to defend Clark in such situations. Former NBA player Chandler Parsons also questioned the whereabouts of Clark's teammates.
Carter, who declined to comment on the incident, responded to Parsons on Sunday, stating that she is "cool" with Clark's teammates. "We grown asf & y’all talking about enforcer," she added. "Man, gtfoh. Hoop up or shut up."
Clark, for her part, said that she did not want to retaliate against any Sky players and risk hurting her team's chances of winning the game.
The incident has reignited the debate over the role of physicality in women's basketball. Some argue that the WNBA needs to adopt a more protective stance towards its players, while others believe that the league should embrace a more competitive and physical style of play.
Green's comments have added fuel to this debate, and it remains to be seen whether the Indiana Fever will respond by signing an enforcer. However, the incident has certainly raised questions about the safety of players in the WNBA and the league's approach to physicality.
