Actress Drew Barrymore has recounted a harrowing experience during a first date, where she feared for her life. Barrymore recalled how a seemingly harmless encounter turned sinister when she was taken to the man's basement, leading her to believe he intended to murder her.
During an episode of her talk show, "The Drew Barrymore Show," Drew Barrymore shared an unforgettable story about a first date that took a terrifying turn. She recounted how she went on a date with someone she thought she knew, but it quickly escalated into a situation that made her fear for her life.
"I knew a lot of people who knew him, so it felt safe, right?" Barrymore said. "But then he was like, 'Come to my apartment,' which... if I didn't know people who know him would have never done. Ever."
The actress went to his apartment, which was undergoing a remodel. She was initially intrigued by their shared passion for home design and followed him downstairs to the basement.
"OK, stop. Why are you going to the basement?" co-host Ross Mathews asked. "Because I thought I knew this person!" Barrymore exclaimed. "You were in 'Scream.' Don't you know how horror movies go? This is step one. You don't do that," Mathews told her.
In 1996, Barrymore starred in the hit slasher movie "Scream," in which her character was murdered in the first scene. Despite the warning signs, Barrymore continued down to the basement, which was the laundry room.
"I'm a big fan of laundry," she said. "So, he was like, 'Oh, you should see the laundry room. Look at this.'" Barrymore walked into the basement and noticed a giant roll of clear plastic. She began to feel uneasy and decided to go back upstairs.
"I said, 'You know, I know we don't really know each other, but I was really afraid that you were going to murder me,'" Barrymore recalled telling him. Her date was taken aback by her confession, but Barrymore said it "totally bonded us."
Despite the awkward encounter, she and her date remained friends for years, often joking about the incident. Barrymore also revealed that the experience made her realize how important it is to trust her instincts.
"I should have never gone down to that basement," she said. "But it was a good reminder to always listen to your gut feeling."
