The government alleges the plot involved veterans of the country's civil war and has detained several suspects, including former congressman José Santos Melara.

El Salvador has averted a bomb plot that authorities claim was planned to occur during President Nayib Bukele's inauguration ceremony on June 1. This plot was allegedly orchestrated by "veterans" of El Salvador's civil war from 1980-1992, including former leftist guerrillas.

The National Police of El Salvador has confiscated explosive materials from various raids, including small cylinders of explosives with fuses and sacks of ammonium nitrate. The explosives were said to be destined for gasoline stations, supermarkets, and government buildings.

Authorities raided a former rebel stronghold in Guazapa, located on the outskirts of San Salvador, where some of the explosives were discovered. The raid also led to the arrest of José Santos Melara, a former congressman of the left-wing FMLN party, formed by former guerrillas. Melara, as the leader of the national association of FMLN veterans, is accused of financing the bomb plot.

The Salvadoran Insurrection Brigade has been identified as the shadowy force responsible for the plot by the police. Additionally, seven other suspects have been apprehended.

The Block of Popular Resistance and Rebellion (BPR) condemned Melara's arrest as "arbitrary and politically motivated." The group demanded his release and expressed their opposition to Bukele's presidency, labeling it "unconstitutional and illegitimate."

Bukele, who recently won a second term in February, has faced criticism for his anti-gang operations and mass arrests. However, the alleged bomb plot raises concerns regarding the conditions of the 1992 peace accords that concluded the civil war and granted former rebels a place in politics.

Critics argue that Bukele's actions, such as targeting critics, incarcerating a significant portion of the population in his anti-gang crackdown, and reducing the number of congressional seats, undermine El Salvador's fragile democracy established after the civil war.

Despite these criticisms, Bukele's gang crackdown has garnered popularity among the public, who were once terrorized by the brutal street gangs that extorted and killed citizens. Bukele's party gained a super majority in Congress, granting him significant power.

The alleged bomb plot and the concerns surrounding Bukele's consolidation of power have heightened tensions in El Salvador. As the authorities continue their investigation into the plot, it remains to be seen how the events will impact the country's political and social landscape.

The upcoming inauguration of President Nayib Bukele on June 1 will be closely watched, both within El Salvador and internationally, as it will provide an indication of the direction the country will take under his leadership.
