The announcement, made by the Greater Memphis Chamber on Wednesday, heralds the largest capital investment by a new-to-market company in Memphis history. The supercomputer, which has been dubbed the "Gigafactory of Compute," is expected to create numerous high-quality jobs and serve as a catalyst for technological advancement.

The Memphis and Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine, Tennessee Valley Authority, and other stakeholders are still required to approve the project before it can proceed. "Memphis is a city of innovators, so it's no surprise that it feels like home to those looking to change the world," said Memphis Mayor Paul Young. "We have great partners at the Greater Memphis Chamber and MLGW who were ready to make this happen."

Political representatives from the area, including House Democrat Rep. Steve Cohen and GOP Rep. David Kustoff, praised the decision by xAI to establish its supercomputer in Memphis. xAI, officially launched in July 2023, is dedicated to developing advanced AI technologies and understanding the fundamental nature of the universe. The company, which is also responsible for the social media platform X and the AI chatbot Grok, has set ambitious goals for its Memphis project.
