Actress Emily Blunt opens up about the complexities of onscreen chemistry, admitting to having worked with costars she didn't genuinely like and even felt sick after kissing them.
Emily Blunt has been captivating audiences with her undeniable talent and onscreen presence for decades. But behind the scenes, the British actress has experienced the highs and lows of onscreen chemistry, revealing that it doesn't always equate to genuine fondness offscreen.
During a candid interview on "The Howard Stern Show," Blunt confessed to having had chemistry with certain costars while simultaneously having a less-than-pleasant experience working with them. Stern inquired about the identity of these individuals, but Blunt remained tight-lipped.
Blunt has graced the big screen alongside a constellation of Hollywood heavyweights, including Tom Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow," Colin Firth in "Arthur Newman," and Matt Damon in "The Adjustment Bureau." She also shared the spotlight with her husband, John Krasinski, in "A Quiet Place," although their characters refrained from any onscreen smooches.
"I've had chemistry with people who...I have not had a good time working with them," Blunt revealed, withholding their identities. "Sometimes it's a strange thing. Sometimes you could really, really like someone, and you could be pals, and you could have a rapport that's really effortless, but it doesn't translate onscreen and chemistry is this strange thing. It's an ethereal thing that you can't really bottle up and buy or sell. It's like there or it's not."
Blunt acknowledges that onscreen chemistry can be partially manufactured, but she emphasizes the importance of establishing a genuine connection with one's costar. "It's just easier when you have a natural rapport with someone," she explains. "My feeling is I've got to find something I love about everybody. I have to find something... Even if it's one thing."
The actress underscores the power of embracing even the smallest qualities in her costars, such as a pleasant laugh or a respectful demeanor. By focusing on the positive aspects, she has found it easier to create believable onscreen connections.
However, Blunt is no stranger to experiencing the less savory side of onscreen chemistry. "Have you ever had to kiss someone on screen and you wanted to throw up? Like it was that bad," Stern asked. "Absolutely," Blunt confessed without hesitation.
"I wouldn't say it's sort of extreme loathing," she clarifies with a chuckle, "But I've definitely not enjoyed some of it."
Despite these occasional unpleasant experiences, Blunt remains an advocate for the transformative power of onscreen chemistry. In her latest project, "The Fall Guy," she shares the screen with Ryan Gosling, a costar she describes as a "gem of a person."
Through her journey as an actress, Emily Blunt has learned that chemistry and camaraderie are integral elements of creating memorable performances. By embracing the complexities of both onscreen and offscreen relationships, she continues to captivate audiences with her authentic and nuanced portrayals.
