Enhancing Church Safety: Surging Demand for Security Measures Amidst Worship Threats

In the wake of recent near-shootings and attacks on US churches, security experts emphasize the importance of implementing safety measures at places of worship. Congregations are increasingly exploring options such as security guards, active shooter training, and coordination with law enforcement. The government also offers resources and grants to help churches enhance their security.

In the face of heightened threats and recent near-miss shootings at churches across the nation, security experts are urging houses of worship to prioritize their safety measures. Congregants are responding to the growing concern with a surge in interest in implementing security protocols, including armed or unarmed guards, training, and collaboration with law enforcement.

The need for enhanced security became evident after a series of incidents in recent weeks. In North Braddock, Pennsylvania, a man interrupted a church service, pointing a gun at the pastor. In Louisiana, a teen approached a church during a First Communion Mass with a firearm, while another armed individual barged into Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, opening fire.

The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) strongly recommend that churches and other places of worship establish preparedness plans and conduct safety assessments. The government also provides grants for nonprofit security to cover expenses related to physical safety measures. Furthermore, local authorities offer training programs specifically designed for houses of worship.

Churches are increasingly turning to security guards, both armed and unarmed, to bolster their safety measures. David Katz, CEO of Global Security Group, a private security firm founded by former federal agents and law enforcement officials, reports a surge in demand for security services at places of worship. He emphasizes that armed volunteer security is not a new concept, particularly in Jewish synagogues, but the demand is rising as more churches explore their options.

Katz, a former special agent with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), began training volunteers at his own Texas synagogue after the invasion of Israel by Hamas terrorists and antisemitic attacks in the US. He now offers training and security services to churches as well.

"Most synagogues and churches simply don't have the budget to hire full-time armed security," Katz said. Thus, he provides training to equip worshippers with the skills to protect themselves. He noted that many congregants are highly motivated to protect their communities and are actively seeking self-defense training.

Pat Brosnan, founder and chairman of Brosnan Risk Consultants, highlights the varying legal landscapes across the country that influence the security measures churches can implement. While some states, such as Texas, allow churches to form their own security teams of parishioners, others, like New York City, have stricter regulations.

Brosnan emphasizes the importance of a visible security presence, stating that "standing tall" at the front door can deter potential attackers. He praises the actions of good Samaritans who have intervened in recent incidents, but urges caution without proper training.

Despite the increasing demand for security, some churches opt for a more limited approach due to financial constraints. They may choose to have guards posted only during service hours or special events.

Experts emphasize the importance of assessing each church's unique needs and resources when developing a security plan. By implementing appropriate measures, churches can enhance their preparedness and create a safer environment for congregants to worship.
