The Carolina Hurricanes have unconditionally waived Evgeny Kuznetsov, terminating the final year of his $64.2 million contract.
Carolina Hurricanes management announced on Wednesday that they have reached a mutual agreement with Evgeny Kuznetsov to terminate the remainder of his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent. The 32-year-old Russian forward had one year left on a seven-year, $64.2 million contract he signed with the Washington Capitals in 2017. The Hurricanes acquired Kuznetsov from the Capitals at this past season's trade deadline.
"Ultimately, both sides agreed this was the best course of action for both the player and the team," said Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky. "We thank Evgeny for his time with the team and wish him and his family the best."

Kuznetsov had a solid regular season with the Hurricanes, scoring two goals and adding five assists in 20 games. He also contributed four goals and two assists in 10 postseason appearances before the team was eliminated by the New York Rangers.
Prior to joining the Hurricanes, Kuznetsov spent his entire NHL career with the Capitals. He made his debut in the 2013-2014 season and quickly established himself as a key member of the team. Kuznetsov was named to the All-Star team once and played a pivotal role in the Capitals' Stanley Cup victory in 2018, leading the team in scoring with 12 goals and 32 points during their championship run.

Over the course of his 11-year NHL career, Kuznetsov played in 743 games, amassing 173 goals and 402 assists. He is a skilled offensive player known for his playmaking abilities and scoring touch.
Following his departure from the Hurricanes, it is believed that Kuznetsov intends to return to Russia and play for SKA Saint Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

The Hurricanes will now turn their attention to filling the void left by Kuznetsov in their lineup. The team has a number of young players who could step up and take on a larger role, and they may also look to make a trade or signing in free agency to add depth to their roster.
Kuznetsov's exit from Carolina marks the end of a brief but productive stint with the team. He brought a wealth of experience and talent to the Hurricanes, but ultimately, both sides felt that it was in their best interests to part ways. The Hurricanes wish Kuznetsov well as he continues his career in the KHL.
