Demarko Smith, a resident of Dowagiac, vividly recounts the ordeal: "When he moved in, he would just start bringing in trash, old washers, dryers." The influx of unknown individuals and abandoned campers in their backyard raised concerns for Smith and his family.

As the situation escalated, the original homeowner passed away, and the squatter's presence became entrenched. Despite the family's efforts to reclaim the property, Michigan's squatter laws hindered their attempts.

Over time, the squatters' illegal activities took a toll on the neighborhood. "They had no running water, no electricity for about three years," Smith shares. The property became a hub for illicit activities, as evidenced by frequent police visits, fire hazards, and open drug use.
