Infamous neonatal nurse Lucy Letby, already serving a life sentence for murdering seven infants, has been convicted of attempting to kill another baby in her care.

British nurse Lucy Letby, 34, faces further condemnation after being found guilty of attempting to murder an eighth baby in her care. This conviction adds to her previous sentence of life imprisonment for murdering seven infants and attempting to murder six others at Countess of Chester Hospital in northwestern England between June 2015 and June 2016.

On Tuesday, a jury in Manchester Crown Court reached a verdict, convicting Letby of trying to kill a premature baby girl known as Child K in February 2016. The prosecution presented evidence that Letby dislodged the infant's breathing tube in the early hours of February 17, 2016, endangering the baby's life.

Letby, who has consistently denied harming any child, showed no emotion as the verdict was read. Her parents gasped and cried, visibly distressed at the outcome.

Senior Prosecutor Nicola Wyn Williams accused Letby of being a "cold-blooded, calculated killer." She argued that Letby's actions were deliberate attempts to harm and kill the helpless infant under her care.

According to Williams, Letby removed the baby's breathing support and remained inactive while the child struggled. She repeated this action twice over the next few hours, potentially to conceal her involvement and make it appear as an accident.

Dr. Ravi Jayaram, a pediatrician at the hospital, testified that he witnessed Letby standing beside the newborn's incubator, displaying no concern or action to assist the child in distress.

Letby denied any recollection of the incident and has maintained her innocence of all the charges against her. However, the jury found her guilty based on the overwhelming evidence presented.

Letby is now serving a life sentence with no chance of release, a punishment reserved for the most heinous crimes in the United Kingdom. Only three other women have received such a severe sentence in recent history.

The case of Lucy Letby has shocked the British public, raising concerns about the safety of infants in hospital care. It has also highlighted the ongoing struggle to prevent and prosecute cases of child abuse and murder, particularly within medical settings.
