James Copenhaver, one of the two victims critically wounded in a July 13 assassination attempt against former President Trump, has spoken out exclusively to Fox News Digital, expressing his sadness over the "political division" in the United States.

James Copenhaver, 74, was one of the two victims critically wounded in a July 13 assassination attempt against former President Trump. In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, his attorney Joseph Feldman relayed Copenhaver's thoughts on the incident.

Copenhaver expressed his dismay at the "political division" in the United States, which he believes has contributed to the tragedy of the shooting. He emphasized that the shooting was "unnecessary" and that the political divide has reached a dangerous level where people willingly attend rallies and resort to violence.

"He's witnessed a lot take place in this country," Feldman said on behalf of Copenhaver. "And this is definitely one of the worst things that he's experienced as an American, and he wants people to understand that it does not have to be like this."

Copenhaver also extended his gratitude to the medical and emergency staff, as well as law enforcement officers, who came to his aid after the shooting. He expressed that he still has a "long road ahead" to recovery.

Despite the trauma he endured, Copenhaver remains firm in his support for former President Trump. Feldman stated that Copenhaver "is unafraid to voice his support for Trump, and he will not allow those who disagree with his views to silence him or prevent him from exercising his rights."

Copenhaver attended the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, about an hour outside of his hometown, with his best friend. He was standing on Trump's left side when shots rang out.

In a video Copenhaver took from his position at the rally, a figure can be seen moving across the rooftop of the AGR building, where the gunman, Thomas Crooks, later fired from. Feldman stated that Copenhaver and others in the crowd heard or saw something pass by, which they assumed was a bullet, and that Copenhaver realized he had been shot when he saw blood on his arm.

"He had almost heard or even seen something kind of whizz past them, which we're assuming is a bullet," Feldman explained. "And he … looked down at his arm and … felt pain initially, but he didn't even realize that he had been shot a second time at that point. He had mentioned that he was in quite a bit of shock at that time. There was a lot of pandemonium. People were screaming. No one really quite knew what was going on right away."

Copenhaver is still coming to terms with the severity of the situation and the part of history he was "physically part of," according to Feldman. He spoke with Trump over the phone from his hospital bed, describing it as a "very pleasant conversation."

For now, Copenhaver and his wife are focused on his recovery. They are grateful for the support they have received and celebrated their 51st anniversary while he was still hospitalized.

David Dutch, 57, was also critically wounded in the assassination attempt and was released from Allegheny General Hospital last week. Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old fire chief, died a hero while protecting his family from gunfire.

The FBI continues to investigate the motive behind the assassination attempt by Thomas Crooks, 20. Text messages revealed that law enforcement officers were aware of a suspicious person near the rally site approximately 90 minutes before the shooting occurred.
