An individual hiking alone in Canada's Alberta region narrowly escaped a severe bear mauling, prompting authorities to emphasize the importance of proper wilderness preparation, including carrying SOS devices and informing others of intended routes.
In the remote wilderness of Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, a 45-year-old hiker from Calgary faced the terrifying ordeal of a bear attack. The incident, reported late Friday morning, left the victim with extensive injuries that required immediate medical attention.
According to Constable Cory Riggs, a public information officer for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the unnamed hiker was traversing a remote section of the Great Divide Trail near Window Mountain Lake when the attack occurred around 11:19 a.m. RCMP officers responded promptly after receiving an emergency SOS activation from the hiker.

The victim was transported by STARS air ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment of his wounds. While the precise species of bear involved in the attack remains undisclosed, experts speculate it likely belonged to either the grizzly or black bear species prevalent in the region.
Just weeks prior to this incident, a man in Calgary endured a similar attack by a female grizzly, highlighting the potential risks associated with wilderness exploration. In addition, an Idaho hunter recently sustained severe injuries in a grizzly encounter within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
Facing a Bear Attack: Guidelines for Survival
The alarming frequency of bear attacks underscores the critical need for proper precautions when venturing into the wild. Authorities strongly recommend carrying SOS devices to facilitate emergency assistance, especially in isolated areas. Additionally, individuals should always inform others of their intended itinerary, including departure and estimated return times.
Hikers should be vigilant and avoid actions that might unintentionally provoke a bear's aggressive response. Maintaining a respectful distance from wildlife, avoiding direct eye contact, and making noise while traversing trails can help mitigate the chances of an encounter.
Facing a Bear Attack: Guidelines for Survival
In the unfortunate event of a bear attack, experts advise playing dead if the bear is a black bear and attempting to fight back if it is a grizzly. Adopting these strategies can significantly improve the chances of survival in the face of a potentially life-threatening situation.
The harrowing experience of the Calgary hiker serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent risks associated with wilderness adventures. By adhering to established safety guidelines and being adequately prepared, individuals can minimize the likelihood of encounters with potentially dangerous wildlife and ensure their own well-being.
