The grieving father of Lucy Morgan, a 6-year-old who died in a freak accident, shares his daughter's profound faith and the hope that sustains his family amidst their loss.
In the wake of a devastating loss, the Morgan family finds solace and strength in the faith that guided their 6-year-old daughter, Lucy, during her short life. Jesse Morgan, Lucy's father, spoke to Fox News Digital about his daughter's unwavering belief in God and the profound impact it has had on their family's grieving process.
Lucy's life was tragically cut short when a freak accident involving a badminton racket resulted in a severe head trauma. Despite the unimaginable pain, the Morgans clung to the knowledge that Lucy had found solace and comfort in her faith. "There's no doubt in my mind that she in her imperfect understanding of life loved Christ and loved God," Jesse stated.
Lucy's prayer journal, discovered after her death, became a beacon of hope for the family. Filled with heartfelt writings and drawings, it revealed the depth of her faith and her desire to be closer to God. "She got it a month before she passed," Jesse recounted. "It was my wife's idea. She said, 'Hey, you can use this to write stuff, write to God if you want.'"
Lucy's words reflected her childlike innocence and her genuine love for God. She wrote, "God is amazing and He created everything." She also drew hearts around "I love Jesus." "She's a kid, and part of our concern is that we want our kids to know God," Jesse explained. "It wasn't a fear-based thing or a demand or forcing them. We want to compellingly show the love of Christ to our children so that they imperfectly see God's love mirrored in us and want more of that."
Jesse emphasized that witnessing Lucy's faith was a precious gift. "I believe that she had the faith of a mustard seed," he said. "And Jesus calls the children to come to him. While her understanding was limited as a child, one of the most beautiful gifts (was) to open up and see the things she wrote, the things she drew."
Prioritizing their children's spiritual well-being, Jesse and his wife made it a daily practice to share the gospel with their four children. "We've explained the gospel to our kids every day," Jesse said. "It wasn't a one-time event. We view it as a continual conversation with our children, all the time, but doubt circled in."
Jesse's blog, New Creation Living, became an outlet for his emotions and a way to connect with others who were praying for his family. "The first post was simply a cry for help to people who I knew would pray for us," he said. "It's been overwhelming, yet I continue to seek to just be myself and to be authentic."
Despite the overwhelming grief that accompanied Lucy's death, the Morgans found it impossible to turn their backs on God. "We didn't want to hang on. There was a big part of us that wanted to be done with God," Jesse admitted. "And we simply couldn't do it. It simply wouldn't happen."
Jesse attributed this unwavering faith to the circumstances that God had placed in their lives, preparing them for the unimaginable. "God put all these things into our lives to, I feel like, to prepare us for this," he said. He recalled singing "He Will Hold Me Fast" with his family two days before Lucy's death, finding solace in the lyrics, "When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast."
"It can be summed up in one of the first lines: 'When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast,'" Jesse recalled. "I never really felt that, and I felt the prayers of millions of people, thousands of people. I don't know how many people are praying and helping us. And that was it."
Jesse's desire is for others to see the miraculous amidst his family's suffering. "It is Christ alone sustaining us," he stressed. "I don't want people to be gawking at the tragedy. I want people to see the miraculous. God didn't do a miracle and bring her back, but God did do a miracle, and that's what I want people to see, that in our hearts that we're still trusting Him."
As the Morgans navigate their grief, they continue to find strength in Lucy's faith. Her prayer journal serves as a reminder of her love for God and the hope that sustains them. "Lucy was with Jesus," Jesse concluded. "And that gives us the hope that we'll see her again."
