The Dallas Police Department mourns the tragic loss of Officer Darron Burks, who was killed in a targeted shooting while sitting in his patrol car.
The Dallas, Texas police community is reeling from the senseless murder of rookie Officer Darron Burks, 46, who was slain in a "targeted" attack on the evening of August 29th.
According to Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia, Burks was between calls and parked in a lot when 30-year-old suspect Corey Cobb-Bey approached and opened fire without provocation. A dispatcher swiftly alerted authorities to the unfolding tragedy, recognizing the urgency from Burks' radio transmission.

"Our officers were targeted by nothing more than the uniforms that they wear and for the brave and honorable job that they do," Chief Garcia emphasized. "I want to be clear here, the word ambush has been thrown around in the last 24 hours. That is not what happened here. Officer Burks was executed."
Burks' untimely demise has left an indelible mark on the Dallas Police Department and the community he served. A 17-year teaching veteran, Burks had only been an officer for a year and a half, yet he had already made an extraordinary impact.

"He epitomized what it meant to wear this uniform…he chose this profession in his calling, and this calling chose him as well," Chief Garcia said.
Burks' academy classmates, who looked up to him despite his age difference, hailed him as an exemplary officer and a true embodiment of their class's values.

The shooting also left two responding officers wounded. Senior Corporal Jamie Farmer was released from the hospital, while Senior Corporal Marissa David remains in critical condition after being shot in the face by Cobb-Bey.
As the community prepares to bid farewell to Officer Burks, Chief Garcia expects a massive turnout at his funeral, scheduled for Saturday at the Watermark Church in Dallas.
"His loss and his sacrifice fortifies us, strengthens us. And, we owe him everything," Chief Garcia said.
Cobb-Bey, the suspected gunman, was killed in a shootout with police during a highway chase following the shooting. The motive behind his heinous act remains under investigation.
The Dallas Police Department has expressed deep gratitude to the community for their support during this difficult time. Officers are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of the city, honoring the legacy of their fallen comrade.
The tragic loss of Officer Burks has sent shockwaves through the nation, prompting an outpouring of condolences and support for his family, friends, and colleagues.
