The family of a little girl who died at the hands of an illegal immigrant in October is fighting to prevent similar tragedies in the future by making a change at the highest levels of government.
The family of a 6-year-old New Jersey girl who died from head trauma caused by a freak accident involving a badminton racket on the final day of a family vacation is fighting to prevent similar tragedies in the future by making a change at the highest levels of government.
Lucy Morgan's death has left an immeasurable void in her family's life. But her parents, Jesse and Bethany, are determined to use her memory to make a difference. They are working with lawmakers to pass legislation that would crack down on illegal immigration and make it easier to deport dangerous criminals.
"We don't want another family to go through what we went through," Jesse said. "We want to make sure that Lucy's death was not in vain."
Lucy was killed by Alfredo Ramos-Vasquez, an illegal immigrant who had been deported twice before. He was driving drunk when he struck Lucy and her family's vehicle head-on. Lucy died at the scene.
Ramos-Vasquez was charged with murder and driving while intoxicated. He is currently in jail awaiting trial.
The Morgan family believes that Ramos-Vasquez should never have been in the United States in the first place. They say that the current immigration system is broken and that it needs to be fixed.
"We need to do more to keep dangerous criminals out of our country," Jesse said. "We need to build a wall on our southern border and we need to increase funding for border patrol agents."
The Morgan family is also calling for changes to the way that illegal immigrants are deported. They say that the current system is too lenient and that it allows dangerous criminals to slip through the cracks.
"We need to make it easier to deport illegal immigrants who have committed crimes," Jesse said. "We need to send a message that we will not tolerate criminals in our country."
The Morgan family's story has resonated with people across the country. Thousands of people have signed their petition calling for changes to immigration laws.
The family is also working with lawmakers to introduce legislation that would crack down on illegal immigration. They are hopeful that their efforts will make a difference and that they will be able to prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy that they have.
"We want to make sure that Lucy's death was not in vain," Jesse said. "We want to make sure that her legacy is one of change."
