Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has declared her refusal to cooperate with a Senate inquiry into her conduct, citing its alleged unlawfulness. The decision comes amid an ongoing legal battle over her involvement in the Trump election interference case.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has vehemently opposed a Georgia Senate committee's investigation into her conduct, asserting that such an inquiry is illegal. The controversy stems from allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Willis and former special prosecutor Nathan Wade, potentially compromising her impartiality in the high-profile Trump election interference case.
The Georgia Court of Appeals has granted former President Donald Trump's request to appeal Judge Scott McAfee's ruling, which upheld Willis' involvement in the case. Judge McAfee previously determined that Wade's removal was necessary to alleviate concerns about Willis' impartiality.
Trump and his co-defendants contend that Willis engaged in a romantic relationship with Wade prior to his appointment, financially benefiting from the association. Both Willis and Wade have denied these accusations.
Judge McAfee acknowledged the potential appearance of impropriety but deemed the evidence presented by the defense insufficient to disqualify Willis. However, he recommended that either Willis and her office step aside or Wade withdraw from the case to remove the perception of bias.
Following McAfee's ruling, Wade resigned as special prosecutor. The judge's order cited an "established record" highlighting a "significant appearance of impropriety" that warranted addressing.
The defendants filed a joint motion for a Certificate of Immediate Review, which Judge McAfee granted. The Georgia Court of Appeals has agreed to hear the defense's case for Willis' disqualification.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis holds the leading role in the sweeping racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants.
The co-defendants have alleged that Willis financially profited by hiring Wade because they were in a pre-existing relationship. Wade and Willis have vehemently denied these accusations, claiming that Wade paid for his own expenses or that Willis reimbursed him in cash.
Despite Willis and Wade's assertions that their relationship began in 2022, Robin Yeartie, a former close associate of Willis, has testified that she believes their relationship started in 2019.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis remains steadfast in her refusal to cooperate with the Georgia Senate investigation into her conduct. The legal battle surrounding her involvement in the Trump election interference case continues, with the Georgia Court of Appeals set to hear the defense's appeal for Willis' disqualification.
