A Georgia Senate committee is investigating Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' use of public funds, revealing "Wild West" management practices and broad discretionary power over a $36 million budget.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is facing scrutiny from a Georgia Senate committee over her spending practices, with revelations of poor oversight and limited accountability in her handling of public funds.
The committee, formed in January by the GOP-controlled Senate, has been examining Willis' $36 million budget, uncovering a lack of controls and broad discretion in her spending.
According to State Sen. Bill Cowsert, a Republican and chairman of the committee, oversight of Willis' budget was "like the Wild West, very little control."
At a recent hearing, Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts and Chief Financial Officer Sharon Whittmore testified that Willis has wide-ranging authority over taxpayer dollars, including decisions about hiring special prosecutors and their compensation.
Pitts stated that Willis was not required to seek pre-approval for hiring an independent special counsel to assist with her activities. This unchecked spending has raised concerns about potential misuse of public funds.
The committee's investigation also revealed that Willis' romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she hired, did not compromise the integrity of the trial despite allegations of impropriety.
However, a Georgia appeals court has agreed to hear an appeal on this decision filed by Trump's legal team, who argue that Willis' conduct has compromised her impartiality in the case.
Despite these revelations, Willis won her primary election by a significant margin, emphasizing her commitment to upholding the law and ensuring equal treatment for all.
"Tonight they delivered a strong and a powerful message," Willis said in her acceptance speech. "They want a district attorney that believes everyone deserves to be safe. And everyone is entitled to some dignity. And it's a message that's pissing folks off. But there is no one above the law in this country. Nor is there anyone beneath it."
Willis is currently appealing a judge's decision to drop multiple charges against former President Donald Trump in a racketeering case. The original indictment included 41 counts against Trump and his co-defendants.
The committee's investigation is ongoing, and its findings could potentially lead to changes in oversight procedures and accountability measures for the Fulton County District Attorney's office.
The outcome of the Senate committee's investigation and the ongoing legal battles surrounding Willis' conduct will shape the future of her tenure as Fulton County District Attorney.
