Noah Hawley, the creator of the popular television series "Fargo," has expressed concerns about the potential implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the entertainment industry. While Hawley acknowledges that AI cannot replace human creativity, he believes it poses a threat in other ways.

"Fargo" creator Noah Hawley is not entirely dismissive of the potential benefits of artificial intelligence, but he is wary of its potential negative consequences, particularly in the entertainment industry. In a recent interview with Fox News Digital at the Primetime Emmy Awards, Hawley expressed his concerns about the proliferation of AI and its potential impact on human creativity.

"On some level, I'm not worried about [AI] replacing our best work with a simulation of our best work," Hawley said. "I'm a human being telling stories to human beings. Decency is not an algorithm. Moral courage is not a formula."

However, Hawley also acknowledged that AI poses a threat to the entertainment industry in other ways. "On another level, as someone who engages a lot with the darkness of capitalism, I think we've got a fight on our hands," he said.

Hawley's concerns stem from the potential for AI to be used to create deepfakes and other forms of synthetic media that could be used to deceive or manipulate the public. He believes that AI could be used to create realistic simulations of actors and other celebrities, which could be used to create content without their consent or to spread misinformation.

Hawley's concerns are shared by many in the entertainment industry, including the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). SAG-AFTRA has been actively lobbying for legislation to regulate the use of AI in the entertainment industry and to protect actors' rights.

In September, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed two bills that addressed concerns about AI and the entertainment industry. AB 1836 restricts the use of AI to create digital replicas of dead performers without the consent of their estates, while AB 2602 increases consent requirements for living performers for AI replicas.

However, Newsom vetoed another bill, SB 1047, which would have provided broader protections against AI-generated deepfakes. Newsom argued that the bill was too broad and would have stifled innovation in the AI industry.

Despite the veto, California and Tennessee have passed AI bills specific to performers, and a revised version of the No Fakes Act has been reintroduced to Congress. The Motion Picture Association, which represents multiple major studios, has also praised the efforts to regulate AI in the entertainment industry.

The debate over AI is likely to continue as the technology continues to evolve. However, Hawley's concerns highlight the importance of considering the potential ethical and societal implications of AI before it becomes widely adopted.
