Lawyers for Colin Gray, the father of the suspected Apalachee High School shooter, have requested that he be separated from other inmates due to concerns for his personal safety amidst widespread media attention and threats against him.

Colin Gray, the father of the suspected Apalachee High School shooter Colt Gray, made his first court appearance on Friday, September 6, in Barrow County Superior Court. Attorneys representing Colin Gray are now asking the court to separate him from other inmates to "ensure his personal safety."

Colin Gray is facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of second-degree cruelty to children in connection to the September 4 attack in Winder, Georgia. He is being held at the Barrow County Detention Center without bond.

In a filing submitted to Barrow County Superior Court on Wednesday, Gray's attorneys argued that the extensive media coverage and public perception, particularly on social media, have resulted in "a nonstop barrage of information" leading to "incalculable number of threats" against Gray, including calls for violence and death.

Given the high-profile nature of the case and the large number of lives affected in the community, Gray's attorneys expressed concerns that there may be inmates within the Barrow County Detention Center who "wish harm" to the defendant. They emphasized the "custodial setting" and the constant supervision required in such an environment, creating opportunities for individuals to inflict violence upon Gray.

To ensure Gray's safety, his attorneys have requested that the court order the Sheriff of Barrow County to keep him separate from all other inmates.

Four people were killed and nine were injured during the shooting at Apalachee High School. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and prompted a review of security measures at schools across the country.

In the wake of the tragedy, Gray's wife, Nikki Gray, has defended her son in a message to the families of the victims, expressing her belief that Colt is not capable of such violence. She has also claimed that her son was bullied at school and that the school administration failed to address the issue.

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office has not yet responded to requests for comment on Gray's request for separation from other inmates. The case is expected to proceed through the court system in the coming months.
