Nearly a year after losing his wife unexpectedly, former NBA head coach Stan Van Gundy has shared her cause of death and the profound grief he's experienced since. Van Gundy spoke openly about his wife Kim's struggles with mental illness and the guilt he feels over her suicide.
In a heartbreaking revelation, former NBA head coach Stan Van Gundy has disclosed that his wife Kim's untimely death last August was caused by suicide. The tragic news comes almost a year after her passing at the age of 61.
Van Gundy, who last coached the New Orleans Pelicans in 2021, candidly shared his grief and despair on the "South Beach Sessions" podcast hosted by sports media personality Dan Le Batard. "She took her own life," Van Gundy confessed, his voice heavy with emotion. "I can't imagine ever getting over that. It was devastating."
The former coach, now an analyst for TNT, spoke at length about his wife of 35 years and the immense void her absence has left in his life. "I never, ever envisioned that I would live another day without Kim," he said. "Even now, after eight months, I struggle to accept that I'll never see her again."
Van Gundy recalled that his wife had been battling mental health issues, but he never anticipated such a drastic outcome. "My responsibility in life was to take care of her and to give her a great life," he said. "And I failed in that."
The grieving husband shared that he had been attending therapy to cope with the trauma. However, the pain and guilt weigh heavily on him. "I'm blessed with a wonderful family, but my primary responsibility was to take care of Kim, and I couldn't do it," he said.
Van Gundy met his wife in 1984 while he was the head basketball coach at Castleton State College in Vermont. He recalled her as an exceptional woman who inspired him in many ways. "Her values were better than mine," he said. "I want to live a life that she would be proud of."
The former coach's story sheds light on the devastating impact of suicide and the importance of seeking help when struggling with mental health. Van Gundy encouraged others to value their relationships and provide support to those in need. "Life can be a struggle, but it's essential to reach out for help when you're feeling overwhelmed," he said.
Van Gundy's fellow commentators and sports personalities have expressed their condolences and support. "We're heartbroken for Stan and his family," TNT analyst Shaquille O'Neal said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them."
The NBA community has also extended its support, offering condolences and resources to Van Gundy and his family. The league has emphasized its commitment to mental health awareness and encourages anyone struggling with these issues to reach out for help through the NBA's Mental Health Helpline or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
In the wake of his wife's death, Van Gundy has dedicated himself to honoring her legacy by living a life that reflects her values and making a positive impact on the world. His powerful story serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion, empathy, and the need to prioritize mental health in our society.
