"This is obviously very complicated and doubly so in my case," Mujica told reporters, referring to his autoimmune disease. Doctors are evaluating Mujica's condition and considering treatment options, but he acknowledged the challenges posed by chemotherapy and surgery.

Mujica rose to prominence as a leader of the Tupamaros, a Marxist guerilla group inspired by the Cuban revolution. Despite being shot several times by police and imprisoned until the fall of Uruguay's dictatorship in 1985, Mujica's political career flourished.

Elected as Uruguay's 40th president in 2010, Mujica implemented bold reforms, including legalizing same-sex marriage, promoting women's rights, and making Uruguay the first nation to fully legalize recreational marijuana. His honesty and unwavering values earned him admiration both in Uruguay and internationally.

Mujica's humility extended beyond his politics. He resided in a modest house on the outskirts of Montevideo and donated most of his salary to charity. "When we have companions, we're not poor," he said.

Despite retiring from the Senate in 2020, Mujica remains a respected figure in the Broad Front, a coalition of leftist and centrist parties. He used his press conference on his diagnosis to inspire Uruguay's youth.

"I want to convey to all the young people that life is beautiful, but it wears you out and you fall," Mujica said. "The point is to start over every time you fall. If there is anger, transform it into hope."

Mujica's diagnosis has sparked concern among Uruguayans and Latin American leaders alike. His legacy as a transformative leader who championed social progress will undoubtedly shape the nation's future.
