The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed the deaths of four Israeli hostages held captive by Hamas, bringing the total number of deceased to eight. The grim news comes as anti-Israel protests continue and international pressure mounts for a cease-fire in the ongoing conflict.

Based on new intelligence, the IDF has pronounced Amiram Cooper, Yoram Metzger, Chaim Peri, and Nadav Powell as dead. The elder men, all in their 80s, were kidnapped on October 7 from Kibbutz Nir Oz and taken hostage by Hamas.

The announcement intensifies the pressure on the Israeli government to accept a U.S.-proposed cease-fire, which aims to end the eight-month war and secure the return of the hostages. About 80 hostages are believed to be still alive in Gaza, along with the remains of 43 others.

The deaths of the hostages have sparked widespread protests in Israel, with demonstrators calling on the government to take immediate action. The international community has also expressed concern and urged a cease-fire to prevent further loss of life on both sides.

President Joe Biden's administration has announced a cease-fire proposal, but Israeli leadership has expressed reluctance to accept it. Israeli officials have vowed to continue military operations against Hamas until the militant group is destroyed.

Israeli bombardments and ground operations in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of over 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry. The Israeli government maintains that many of the casualties have been combatants, but the Health Ministry does not distinguish between civilians and fighters.

Israel's expansion of offensive operations in the southern city of Rafah has severely disrupted humanitarian aid operations. The invasion has cut off the flow of food, medicine, and other essential supplies, leading to widespread hunger and suffering among Palestinians.

Amiram Cooper was an economist and a founder of Kibbutz Nir Oz. Yoram Metzger helped establish the kibbutz winery, and Chaim Peri built the community's art gallery and sculpture garden. Nadav Powell, the youngest among them at age 51, was also a member of the kibbutz.

Three of the men had female relatives who were released during a hostage exchange in November. The families of all four victims have been informed of their deaths.

The circumstances surrounding their deaths in Hamas captivity are still under investigation. Hamas claimed in May that Nadav Powell died after an Israeli airstrike, but no evidence has been provided to support this claim.

Anti-Israel protests continue in the United States and other countries, calling for an end to the violence and the release of the remaining hostages. Palestinian activists and humanitarian organizations are also advocating for a cease-fire to alleviate the suffering in Gaza.

International pressure for a cease-fire is expected to intensify following the confirmation of the deaths of the four hostages. The U.S. government is mediating discussions between Israel and Hamas, but a breakthrough has yet to be achieved.
