New York Mets star Francisco Lindor discusses the team's upcoming trade deadline decisions and shares his thoughts on Pete Alonso's free agency.

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor is a man of focus. He knows his strengths lie in fielding, not in roster management. So, when it comes to the team's upcoming trade deadline decisions, he's leaving those to president of baseball operations David Stearns and co-owner Steve Cohen.

"I'm just a player," Lindor told Fox News Digital. "I focus on playing shortstop. The roster moves, those are for the front office to figure out."

The Mets have big decisions to make this year, thanks in part to the resurgence of Lindor and other players. The team is currently on the cusp of the third wild-card spot in the National League, and a few key additions could put them in contention for the World Series.

One of the biggest decisions facing the Mets is what to do with first baseman Pete Alonso, who is set for free agency after this season. Alonso is one of the most feared power hitters in the league, and he's a fan favorite in New York.

But Alonso is also a Scott Boras client, and Boras has a reputation for getting his clients top dollar. That means the Mets could be facing a hefty contract offer if they want to keep Alonso in pinstripes.

Lindor understands the business side of baseball. He signed a 10-year, $341 million contract with the Mets in 2022, after being traded from the Cleveland Guardians. But he also believes that Alonso has earned the right to test free agency.

"Pete Alonso has been one of the best power hitters the organization has had," Lindor said. "So, yeah, would I love to have him as a teammate? Yes, of course."

"But it also doesn't come down to the organization," Lindor continued. "It comes down to Pete. If Pete doesn't feel like he doesn't get every penny, he has earned the right to go and maximize his money, his worth."

While the Mets are focused on Alonso's future, there are also rumors swirling about Juan Soto, another Boras client. Soto is one of the best young players in baseball, and he's expected to receive a massive contract when he becomes a free agent.

The Mets have been linked to Soto in the past, and Cohen has shown a willingness to spend big on player salaries. But would the Mets be willing to carry three large contracts (Lindor's, Alonso's, and Soto's) on their payroll for years to come?

Lindor isn't concerned with the roster-building decisions. He's focused on one thing: getting into the playoffs with his teammates.

"We have a great team," Lindor said. "We're all pulling in the same direction. I'm excited to see what we can accomplish this year."

The Mets have a lot of work to do before they can compete for a championship. But if they can make the right decisions this trade deadline, and if Alonso and Soto decide to stay in New York, they could be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
