A 689-foot freighter carrying low-grade iron ore began taking on water Saturday morning after it hit an underwater obstacle in Lake Superior near Grand Portage, Minnesota, forcing about half of the 22 people on board to evacuate, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The freighter, named Michipicoten, was approximately 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale, part of Michigan, when it encountered flooding. The Coast Guard reported that there were no indications of any spills from the vessel as on-board pumps worked to displace the water and reduce the ship's listing from 15 degrees to 5 degrees.
The Michipicoten was en route to port for repairs, accompanied by the bulk carrier Edwin H. Gott. U.S. Coast Guard, Border Patrol, and National Park Service vessels were actively involved in the situation, with the cause of the collision still under investigation.
Lake Superior, renowned for its vastness, is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. The collision occurred in the northwest portion of the lake, which stretches across the U.S.-Canadian border.
The Coast Guard emphasized that no one was injured during the incident, and all evacuated individuals were safely accounted for. The rescued personnel were transported to Grand Portage, Minnesota, where they received necessary assistance.
The Michipicoten's crew worked tirelessly to stabilize the ship and prevent further flooding. The coordinated efforts of the Coast Guard and other emergency responders ensured the safety of the vessel and its occupants.
The Coast Guard continues to investigate the cause of the incident, which could involve factors such as underwater hazards, visibility conditions, and the vessel's operational circumstances.
The importance of maritime safety cannot be overstated, and incidents like these underscore the need for vigilance and adherence to established protocols. Authorities work diligently to prevent such occurrences and ensure the safety of those who navigate our waterways.
As the investigation progresses, more details are expected to emerge regarding the circumstances surrounding the collision. The Coast Guard remains committed to providing timely updates on the situation.
