Sixth-year senior quarterback Dillon Gabriel impressed with his numbers in his debut for Oregon, but the Ducks' performance fell short of expectations in their 24-14 victory over Idaho.
Despite accumulating an impressive 380 passing yards and two touchdowns, Dillon Gabriel's debut for No. 3 Oregon was not without its frustrations. The Ducks' 24-14 victory over Idaho exposed areas for improvement, leaving Gabriel eager for more explosive plays and efficient offensive execution.
Gabriel, a Heisman hopeful this season, showcased his experience with poised leadership and calm under pressure. However, he was sacked three times and had only one touchdown pass at halftime. Oregon's offense, which averaged a nation-leading 531.4 yards and 44.2 points per game last year, struggled to reach similar heights in the season opener.

Idaho's spirited effort in the second half, including a 36-yard touchdown pass and a 4-yard rushing score, narrowed the deficit to just three points early in the fourth quarter. Gabriel's 12-yard scoring pass to Tez Johnson with 5:36 remaining sealed the victory for Oregon, but the final outcome fell short of the dominant performance many expected.
Gabriel's impressive numbers, which included becoming the eighth player in FBS history to reach 15,000 career passing yards, were overshadowed by his critical assessment of the team's performance.
"Stats are one thing, but we're focused on winning," Gabriel said. "A win is a win, I will say that, but there's a lot we need to improve on. ... We're explosive, we've got a lot of weapons, and I think at times we bit ourselves in the foot."
Oregon coach Dan Lanning praised Gabriel's leadership and intelligence, but acknowledged the team's need to build on his strengths. Gabriel's debut performance highlighted his potential, but also the work that lies ahead for the Ducks to meet their lofty expectations in the Big Ten.
As Oregon faces a challenging schedule in its inaugural season in the conference, Gabriel and the offense will need to find more consistency and explosiveness if they hope to contend for a championship.
