Gareth Southgate Hints at Euro 2024 as Possible End to England Tenure

England head coach Gareth Southgate has suggested that Euro 2024 could mark the end of his eight-year reign, admitting that failure to win the tournament could result in his departure.

Gareth Southgate, the esteemed manager of the England national team, has hinted that the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament could potentially be his last at the helm of the Three Lions.

In an interview with German newspaper Bild, Southgate expressed a sense of urgency, acknowledging that time is of the essence as he pursues a long-awaited major trophy with England. "If we don't win, I probably won't be here anymore," Southgate declared. "Then it might be my last chance. If we want to be a big team and I want to be a top coach, then you have to deliver in the big moments."

Southgate's tenure has witnessed significant strides for the England team, but it has also been marked by heart-wrenching disappointments. At Euro 2020, England agonizingly lost on penalties to Italy in the final, while they were eliminated in the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup after conceding a late equalizer to Croatia. In the most recent World Cup, England's impressive run ended in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 defeat to France.

Recognizing the cyclical nature of international football, Southgate noted that the post-tournament period often sees a change in coaching staff. "I think about half of the national coaches leave after the tournament, that's the nature of international football," he said. With his current contract expiring at the end of the year, Southgate has refrained from committing to an extension, hinting at a possible exit.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding his future, Southgate's achievements with England have been undeniable. Under his guidance, the Three Lions have consistently performed at a high level, reaching the semifinals or better in the past three major tournaments. The team boasts an array of talented players, including Jude Bellingham, who was recently named La Liga Player of the Year.

Southgate has also been linked to a return to club management, with Manchester United reportedly interested in his services. While he has declined to comment on those rumors, his close relationship with Sir Dave Brailsford, a key figure at United's ownership group, has fueled speculation.

With the 2026 World Cup looming on the horizon, Southgate's future with England remains uncertain. Should he depart after Euro 2024, he will leave a legacy as one of the most successful England managers in history, having transformed the team into a formidable force on the international stage.
