LSU's new starting quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier, is confident in his abilities despite the pressure of replacing Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.

Garrett Nussmeier is stepping into the spotlight as the starting quarterback for the 13th-ranked LSU Tigers, facing the daunting task of replacing reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, who was drafted second overall in this year's NFL Draft.

Nussmeier's predecessors at LSU, Daniels and Joe Burrow, both went on to achieve greatness in the NFL, with Burrow tied as the highest-paid quarterback in the league. However, Nussmeier is determined to forge his own path.

"I think pressure is a privilege," Nussmeier said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital. "I'm blessed to be where I am. I don't feel the pressure to try and be the next Jayden Daniels or the next Joe Burrow. I'm here to be the best Garrett Nussmeier I can be."

Nussmeier gained valuable experience last season, starting in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin while Daniels prepared for the NFL Draft. He threw for an impressive 395 yards in the 35-31 victory, boosting his confidence and providing the team with a glimpse of his potential.

"It definitely was a confidence booster," Nussmeier said. "I hadn't played in a while. It was my first start, to be able to get a win and throw for 400 yards and all that. It was cool."

Nussmeier's preparation has been meticulous, despite being a backup previously. "I always feel like I've prided myself in my preparation, even as a backup and preparing like the starter," he said. "I'm excited, to be honest. I haven't been able to play football for a while."

LSU's expectations have been raised under third-year head coach Brian Kelly. "We don't feel like 10 wins is good enough anymore," Nussmeier said. "We're trying to eliminate those mistakes. We don't want to be almost good enough anymore – we want to be in that conversation and in that pack."

The Tigers face a challenging test in their season opener, traveling to Las Vegas to take on No. 23 USC on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Nussmeier is confident in his team's abilities and is eager to showcase his leadership and talent on the field.

With Nussmeier at the helm, LSU has the potential to make a statement in the highly competitive SEC West division and contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff. His poise, preparation, and determination will be crucial as the Tigers strive to return to their former glory.
