Apalachee High School shooting suspect Colt Gray made his first court appearance Friday in Georgia's Barrow County Superior Court, facing a potential maximum penalty of life in prison without parole or life with the possibility of parole.
Judge Currie Mingledorff II outlined the possible penalties for the four counts of felony murder against Gray, stating that each count carries a maximum sentence of 30 years' imprisonment.

The judge also clarified that the death penalty was not an option due to Gray's age. He remains in custody after his attorneys did not seek bond.
During the hearing, an attorney for Gray informed the court that an "unexpected development" necessitated the appointment of alternate counsel, which would be assigned by the end of the day.

Meanwhile, Gray's father, Colin Gray, appeared in a separate hearing to face charges related to the shooting, including two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter, and eight counts of cruelty to children.
Investigators allege that Colin Gray knowingly allowed his son to possess a weapon despite being aware of his mental health issues.

Judge Mingledorff also outlined the potential penalties for the charges against Colin Gray, which include a maximum of 10 years' imprisonment for each involuntary manslaughter charge and 10 years' imprisonment for each cruelty to children charge.
The court ordered a preliminary hearing in both cases for December 4th.

During the hearing, Colt Gray exhibited signs of distress by rocking back and forth in his chair as the judge outlined the possible sentences.
The shooting at Apalachee High School left four students dead and several others injured.
