Georgia River Network Gala to Honor President Jimmy Carter

The Georgia River Network (GRN), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and conserving Georgia's waterways, will host its annual Georgia Rivers Gala on August 22nd at the Atlanta History Center. This prestigious event will honor former President Jimmy Carter, a lifelong advocate for environmental stewardship and a champion of Georgia's natural resources.

President Carter's unwavering commitment to protecting the environment spans decades. As Governor of Georgia, he established the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and signed into law the Georgia Coastal Marshlands Protection Act. During his presidency, he created the Superfund program to clean up hazardous waste sites and established the National Heritage Areas program to preserve and protect historically significant landscapes.

Upon leaving office, President Carter continued his environmental advocacy work through the Carter Center, which has played a critical role in promoting water conservation, improving water quality, and protecting vulnerable ecosystems around the world. The Carter Center's "Control of the Guinea Worm" program has been instrumental in reducing the prevalence of this debilitating disease, which is transmitted through contaminated water.

In addition to his efforts on the national and international stage, President Carter has also been a staunch supporter of Georgia's waterways. He has worked with GRN to protect the Chattahoochee River, the Flint River, and other waterways that are vital to the state's environment and economy.

The Georgia Rivers Gala is an opportunity to celebrate President Carter's legacy of environmental stewardship and to recognize the importance of protecting Georgia's waterways. The event will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, and a special award presentation to President Carter.

"President Carter has been a tireless advocate for clean water and healthy ecosystems for over five decades," said GRN Executive Director Rena Leverett. "We are honored to recognize his extraordinary contributions and to continue his legacy of protecting Georgia's rivers and watersheds."

The Georgia Rivers Gala is an important fundraiser for GRN, which relies on private donations to support its conservation and education programs. The funds raised from the gala will help GRN continue its work to protect Georgia's waterways and ensure that future generations can enjoy the benefits of clean water and healthy rivers.

Tickets for the Georgia Rivers Gala are available for purchase on GRN's website. Individual tickets start at $350, and tables for 10 start at $3,500. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
