As retail theft continues to surge, Giant Food has implemented new measures to mitigate the issue, including banning unaccompanied minors after 6 p.m. and large bags in select stores in Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
Giant Food, a major supermarket chain, has unveiled a comprehensive policy aimed at curbing rampant retail theft, which has become an alarming issue in Washington, D.C., and Maryland. The new policy, effective since Thursday, targets select stores and introduces several restrictions to enhance customer and employee safety.
Under the revised policy, unaccompanied minors under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering Giant Food stores after 6 p.m. This measure aims to deter minors from engaging in theft or other disruptive behaviors. Additionally, large bags exceeding 14 inches by 14 inches by 6 inches are banned in most stores. In select stores that permit large bags, customers must consent to having their bags tagged upon entry and searched before leaving.

Giant Food emphasized that these measures are part of its ongoing efforts to combat retail theft, which has reached unprecedented levels, jeopardizing business operations and putting associates and customers at risk. Capital One data reveals that in 2022, retailers in Washington, D.C., incurred $120 million in theft-related losses, resulting in a staggering $7.21 million loss in retail sales tax revenue for the city.
Giant Food acknowledged that the new policy may not entirely eliminate retail theft. However, the supermarket chain remains committed to investing in innovative solutions to protect its customers and employees. Previous measures implemented by Giant Food include limiting self-checkout, increasing security presence, restricting exits, collaborating with police to enhance their involvement, securing high-theft items, and banning large bags in select stores.

Despite these efforts, Giant Food recognizes the need for further action to address the growing retail theft problem. The chain stated, "None of the tactics we deploy is the ultimate solution to the problem we face."
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has affirmed its commitment to combating retail theft and other related issues. MPD spokesperson assured Fox News Digital that the police department maintains open communication with retailers throughout the city to address concerns and enhance safety.

MPD's website, however, does not provide more specific theft statistics. Giant Food's new measures are a testament to the urgent need to address retail theft, which continues to pose a significant challenge for businesses and communities across the nation.
