Former New York Giants players, including Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks, are expressing their disappointment after the team's dismal performance in their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

The New York Giants' lackluster season debut has left fans and former players alike reeling, with legendary linebacker Lawrence Taylor expressing a desire to suit up and play better than the current team.

During an appearance on the "Bleav in Giants" podcast, Taylor's former teammate, Carl Banks, revealed that Taylor was so frustrated with the Giants' first-half performance against the Vikings that he wanted to put his pads back on.

"He looked at me and—this is a true story, folks. If you want to know what we [the 100 greatest Giants] were thinking at halftime," said Banks. "Lawrence looked at me at halftime and said, ‘Carl, I could pick 22 of us right now and go out and play better than these guys. We’d be in this game.’ The youngest guy in that line was probably 50 years old."

Taylor and Banks, who were honored among the Giants' 100 greatest players at MetLife Stadium during the team's century celebration, witnessed firsthand the team's 28-6 defeat.

The Giants' offensive struggles were particularly glaring, with quarterback Daniel Jones completing just 22 of 42 passes for 186 yards and two interceptions while being sacked five times.

Entering his sixth season and the second year of a four-year, $160 million contract, Jones was expected to lead the Giants back to the playoffs like he did in 2022. However, his performance in the season opener has raised concerns about his ability to fulfill those expectations.

Despite the disappointing start, the Giants have a chance to bounce back in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders, who also suffered a blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1.

However, the frustration expressed by Taylor and Banks highlights the need for the Giants to make significant improvements if they want to avoid a disappointing season.

The championship pedigree that once defined the Giants hasn't been seen in East Rutherford, New Jersey, for some time, with the team making only two playoff appearances since their 2011 Super Bowl victory.

Giants fans and former players alike are hoping that the team can turn things around and return to their winning ways, but the product they witnessed in Week 1 has left them with a sense of urgency for improvement.
