Michael Brown, the attorney for suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann, is answering questions surrounding the disturbing search history allegedly found on his client's devices. These new revelations come as Heuermann faces additional murder charges in connection with the deaths of Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla, bringing the total number of alleged victims to six.
Michael Brown, the attorney for Rex Heuermann, the suspected serial killer recently charged with the murders of Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla, has addressed allegations surrounding his client's disturbing search history.
During a court appearance, prosecutors revealed the discovery of a document on Heuermann's computer believed to be a "planning document" outlining his methodical approach to killings. The document reportedly includes sections on targets, supplies, and dump sites.
Brown has acknowledged the existence of the document but has argued that it was not used for criminal purposes. "It's important to note that this document is not a confession or evidence of guilt," Brown said. "We believe it was created as a work of fiction or as a way for Heuermann to explore his own thoughts and fantasies."
The Gilgo Beach murders, which remained unsolved for over a decade, have been the subject of intense investigation. A task force composed of state and local investigators pieced together evidence that led to Heuermann's arrest in 2023.
The case against Heuermann has been strengthened by DNA evidence and the discovery of the "planning document." However, Brown maintains his client's innocence and has vowed to vigorously defend him.
"Mr. Heuermann is a good man who has been unfairly accused," Brown said. "We will not hesitate to challenge the prosecution's evidence and present our own case in court."
The Gilgo Beach murders have garnered national attention and have been the subject of numerous documentaries and news reports. The ongoing investigation and trial promise to shed further light on one of the most notorious and haunting unsolved cases in American history.
The indictment of Rex Heuermann on additional murder charges has brought the total number of alleged victims in the Gilgo Beach killings to six.
Jessica Taylor's remains were found in 2003 and 2011, while Sandra Costilla's remains were discovered in 1993. These deaths, along with the murders of the "Gilgo Four" - Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes - have now been linked to Heuermann.
John Ray, the attorney for Shannan Gilbert's family, believes that Heuermann may have held his victims captive for an extended period. The "planning document" allegedly found on Heuermann's computer mentions Stockholm syndrome, suggesting that some of the victims may have been brainwashed or controlled by their captor.
Another Long Island homicide victim who may be tied to Heuermann is Valerie Mack. Her dismembered remains were found near the Gilgo victims' bodies. The discovery of additional remains has raised questions about the extent of the suspected killing spree and the number of victims involved.
The investigation into Valerie Mack's murder previously implicated another serial killer, John Bittrolff, who is serving a prison sentence for two other murders. However, the new evidence suggests that Heuermann may also be responsible for her death.
If Heuermann is responsible for any of the deaths out east, his suspected killing spree would have started years earlier than previously known. The discovery of Costilla's remains in 1993 indicates that Heuermann may have been active for a longer period than initially believed.
Despite the mounting evidence against him, Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges in connection with the Gilgo Four deaths. His trial is scheduled to begin later this year. Brown has stated that he will vigorously defend his client and present evidence to support Heuermann's innocence.
The ongoing investigation and trial promise to shed further light on the Gilgo Beach murders and the true scope of Heuermann's alleged crimes.
