New details emerge in the case of the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer, Rex Heuermann, as prosecutors reveal he kept meticulous notes outlining his gruesome plans.
Rex Heuermann, the suspected Long Island serial killer accused of murdering six women between 1993 and 2010, allegedly maintained detailed notes on his crimes, revealing a chilling methodology that evolved over time.
Investigators recovered a deleted document from Heuermann's computer, known as the "HK2002-04" file, which contained a blueprint for his actions. The file listed "problems," "supplies," and "targets," along with checklists for "pre-prep," "prep," and "post event."
Heuermann's notes included gruesome instructions for disposing of victims, such as "wash body inside and all cavities" and "remove trace evendice (sic) [finger prints/hair]." He also noted the number of traffic cameras along his routes to the dump sites and reminders to use push pins and heavy rope.
Prosecutors allege that Heuermann's methodology changed over the years, although many victims were found wrapped in materials like camouflage burlap or surgical drapes. His efforts to remove his DNA and fingerprints were allegedly unsuccessful, as hairs found on multiple victims matched either him or his household members.
Heuermann's estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, denies any involvement in the crimes and has stated that she was unaware of his activities. According to court documents, Ellerup was not residing with Heuermann during the murders.
Police have received reports of Heuermann's old Chevy Avalanche from witnesses in connection with two murders. They possess decades of phone records, internet searches, and DNA evidence.
Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and cold case expert, believes the evidence against Heuermann is overwhelming. He speculates that prosecutors may have offered a plea deal for full information on the scope of his crimes.
John Kelly, a criminal profiler, explains that serial killers often evolve over time, experimenting with different methods until they find their preferred one. The dramatic differences in the Taylor and Costilla cases suggest that Heuermann may be linked to additional unsolved murders.
Police arrested Heuermann last year in connection with three cold case murders and later added a fourth victim. He faces charges for the murder of Jessica Taylor in 2003 and Sandra Costilla in 1993.
Investigators continue to examine hundreds of electronic devices seized from Heuermann's home, and cold case investigators in multiple states are exploring his potential connection to other homicides. Giacalone predicts that Heuermann may prove to be one of the most prolific serial killers in history.
