A year after Rex Heuermann's arrest, Suffolk County police continue to uncover incriminating evidence against the accused Gilgo Beach serial killer. The 60-year-old New York City architect now faces charges in the deaths of eight women, with prosecutors believing he may have claimed even more victims.
In July 2023, Suffolk County police arrested Rex Heuermann in connection with the unsolved murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. The investigation has since expanded, with Heuermann facing additional charges in the deaths of Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Valerie Mack.

Investigators have meticulously combed through evidence seized during a 12-day search of Heuermann's home, uncovering a trove of incriminating materials. A chilling note recovered from one of his computers allegedly contained the words "small is good," referring to the petite stature of his suspected victims.
Heuermann's suspected victims were notably petite, with many barely reaching 5 feet tall. Prosecutors allege that he stalked and preyed on vulnerable women, targeting those who fit his twisted preferences.

The case against Heuermann has taken a dark turn, with investigators uncovering connections to other cold cases in several states where he had ties. The Gilgo Four, consisting of Barthelemy, Waterman, Costello, and Brainard-Barnes, were found dismembered and scattered near Gilgo Beach in 2010.
Heuermann's digital footprint has also provided crucial evidence. A computer file known as "HK2002-04," which had been deleted but recovered by forensic investigators, allegedly contains a list of targets, dump sites, and potential problems. This file, along with traffic camera logs, has aided police in identifying potential crime scenes and retracing Heuermann's movements.

Prosecutors allege that Heuermann consumed material about other serial killers, including the works of former FBI profiler John Douglas. They claim that he studied the methods of these infamous criminals, seeking to evade detection and perfect his own sinister tactics.
Heuermann's wife, Asa Ellerup, has filed for divorce and revealed her battle with cancer. Her attorney, Bob Macedonio, states that her life has been shattered by her husband's arrest and the allegations against him. Ellerup maintains contact with Heuermann in jail, but has reserved judgment pending the outcome of his trial.
