Golf influencer Grace Charis took to social media to express her support for Scottie Scheffler, who was recently arrested and charged with assault of a police officer. Charis posted a photo of herself in a crop top shirt with Scheffler's mugshot across her chest, along with the caption "#FREESCOTTIE."
Golf influencer Grace Charis has shown her support for Scottie Scheffler following his arrest and subsequent release on bond. Charis, who has a combined following of over 6 million on Instagram, TikTok, and X, posted a photo of herself wearing a crop top with Scheffler's mugshot printed across her chest. The photo was accompanied by the caption "#FREESCOTTIE."
Scheffler was arrested early Friday morning and charged with second-degree assault of a police officer (a felony), criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic. The charges stem from an incident that occurred at a Louisville intersection.
According to police, Scheffler was driving his Cadillac Escalade when he allegedly ran a red light and nearly struck a police cruiser. When the officer attempted to pull Scheffler over, he allegedly fled the scene and led police on a brief chase.
Scheffler was eventually apprehended and taken into custody. He was released on bond later that day.
In a statement released after his release, Scheffler apologized for his actions and said that he was "deeply sorry for the inconvenience and embarrassment that I have caused."
"I take full responsibility for my actions and I am committed to learning from this experience," Scheffler said. "I am grateful for the support of my family, friends, and fans during this difficult time."
Charis's show of support for Scheffler has been met with mixed reactions on social media. Some users have praised Charis for standing up for Scheffler, while others have criticized her for supporting someone who has been accused of a serious crime.
Despite the controversy, Charis's post has garnered over 1 million likes on Instagram. It remains to be seen whether Scheffler's arrest will have a long-term impact on his career.
