Professional golfer Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from his wife, Erica, after seven years of marriage, according to court records in Florida. TMZ Sports first reported on the divorce filing.
The reasons for the divorce are not immediately known, and McIlroy's attorney has told Fox News Digital that he does not comment on pending lawsuits.
McIlroy's manager, Sean O'Flaherty, released a statement later Tuesday confirming the divorce filing and emphasizing McIlroy's desire for a respectful and amicable resolution.
Rory and Erica began dating in 2015 after McIlroy, a PGA Tour star, and tennis star Caroline Wozniacki broke off their engagement in May 2014. McIlroy and Erica became engaged later in 2015 and married in April 2017. They share one child together.
Erica McIlroy, a former PGA of America employee, has been a constant presence at McIlroy's side, attending several tournaments, including last year's Ryder Cup.
The divorce news comes as McIlroy is enjoying a successful season on the PGA Tour. He recently won the Wells Fargo Championship and is building momentum heading into the PGA Championship this weekend. He also won the Zurch Classic with Shane Lowry in a playoff back in April.
McIlroy has 26 wins on the PGA Tour, including the two in 2024. He has four major victories, with the last one coming in the 2014 PGA Championship. He has two of those titles.
The Northern Irishman is also in the middle of the PGA Tour's squabble with LIV Golf. He resigned from the PGA Tour board in November as officials tried to work on a merger agreement.
The divorce filing has shocked the golf world, and fans are eager to learn more about the reasons behind the split. McIlroy has always been a private person, and it remains to be seen if he will publicly address the divorce.
In the meantime, McIlroy will continue to focus on his golf career, where he remains one of the top players in the world.
