Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) has formally filed articles of impeachment against President Biden, charging him with "abuse of power" and attempting to force Israel into altering its defense policies by using lethal aid as leverage. The first-term House Republican asserts that it was his "constitutional duty" to initiate this action.

According to Rep. Mills, President Biden sought a "quid pro quo" with Israel, offering vital military aid in exchange for policy changes. This, he argues, not only compromised the credibility of the United States but also undermined the interests of Israel, a longstanding ally.

Mills has drawn parallels between Biden's comments on Israel and former President Donald Trump's leveraging of lethal aid to Ukraine unless Kyiv announced an investigation into the Bidens. He maintains that Biden's actions are impeachable offenses, similar to those that led to Trump's first impeachment.

Biden's high-stakes ultimatum to Israel's government came during a CNN interview, where he stated that he would withhold weapons historically used to deal with major operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized that Israel would continue to receive support for defensive systems like the Iron Dome but not for offensive weapons.

Mills' legislative text argues that Biden "used the powers of the presidency in a manner that compromised the national security of the United States and its ally Israel." It accuses Biden of abusing his office to force policy changes in Israel, potentially leading to consequences for both countries.

While the House's ongoing impeachment inquiry into Biden remains inconclusive, the push for a Senate trial related to the Israel weapons dispute appears unlikely at this stage. However, it reflects the heightened tensions between Washington and Jerusalem amidst Israel's conflict with Hamas.

A White House official has dismissed Mills' impeachment effort as "ridiculous," arguing that senior administration officials had made similar public statements about Rafah and that the decision on weapons shipments was based on concerns about an operation Israel intended to launch.

White House national security communications adviser John Kirby emphasized that Israel had not yet launched an operation in Rafah and that the President's comments referred to a hypothetical future scenario. He expressed hope that Israel would not launch such an operation and that the U.S. would continue to work with them on alternative approaches.

The push for impeachment articles against Biden underscores the sky-high tensions that have enveloped Washington amid Israel's war on Hamas following the terrorist group's October 7th attack. The conflict has sparked intense debate and heightened concerns about the U.S.-Israel relationship.
